Charles Eugene and Mary McKechnie Walton, along with three children, were
members of the 1879-80 Hole in the Rock company. Charles fiddled for the group's
dances, and signaled the company with his cornet. His son, Charles, Jr., is one
specifically mentioned as being lowered in a barrel over the cliff at Hole in the
Rock to assist in building that road. Charles was clerk of that pioneer
body, and became first clerk of San Juan County, and stake. Charles became a
prominent educator in San Juan County, eventually moving his family to Monticello.
Jane Walton was the first Relief Society president in San Juan. A generous, but brave woman, she
knocked-out a belligerent Indian with her garden hoe when he would not work for
his supper. She was accidentally shot and killed in 1891, during the 24th of July celebration, at
Monticello.
The family chose to represent them by setting-up the Walton cabin as a schoolroom.
