A SHORT SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF MARGARET NEBRASKA IMLAY SEVEY

My mother, Margaret Nebraska Imlay, was born 6 June 1853 on the plains of Nebraska as her family was en route to Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the daughter of James Havens and Anna Eliza Coward Imlay, and is of Irish descent

Her fifth great grandfather, Patrick Imlay, was born in the Highlands of Scotland- Aberdeenshire in 1660-1661 and is the emigrant ancestor. He lived in Monmouth County, New Jersey as early as 1693. His wife's name was Margaret (surname not known) and they had five children, namely: Peter, Robert, William, John*, and Parthenia.

Margaret's daughter, Minerva Elizabeth, stated, "I know very little of Mother's parents except that her father was left an orphan very early in life and was raised by his Uncle Thomas (Imlay). The following story is told of his father. When he, James Haven, was born, his mother passed away and soon afterward his father took him Indian fashion on hsi back until he had to go to the front lines (War of 1812). At this time he left him with a family in the vicinity hoping to return for him soon, but instead he gave his life for his country leaving little James Haven an orphan. He was then returned to his father's people and his Uncle Thomas raised him. James Haven was born 6 April 1815 in Imlaystown, New Jersey. He married (1) Sarah Engle Butterfield and had one child, Joseph. James Haven married again (2), Anna Eliza Coward, and they had nine children. Mother was the sixth child. When she was two or three weeks old, her little [sic] sister, Rachel Rebecca, not yet tow years old, passed away and was buried on the plains (of Nebraska) along the way. After James had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his Uncle Thomas offered him a considerable sum of money if he would give up the church and stay in New Jersey, but he chose to go with the Mormons to Utah where he became a rancher and farmer. He arrived in Salt Lake City in 1854.

"In 1862, Mother's parents, James Haven and Anna Eliza, went with others to help settle New Harmony. It was there she spent most of her girlhood days. It was there she met George Washington Seavey and in 1868 she became his second wife. In 1871 her husband was called to take charge of the resettlement of Panguitch, Utah, where he served as bishop for nine years. Her first four children were born here and here the first three of those children died. Their children are:

    “Margaret Mariah Seavey 23 August 1871 - 1872
    "Abraham Seavey 20 Sept. 1873 - 1873
    "Isaac Seavey 3 August 1877 - 3 August 1877
"George Francis Seavey 26 August 1878
"Minerva Elizabeth Seavey 14 November 1888
"Phoebe Vilate Seavey 22 May 1891
    "Lynn Lorenzo born 1895 - 28 August 1905

“Mother was one of the three women who went with the expedition to San Juan County to open that country for settlement. I/n 1887 she moved to Colonia Juarez,Chihuahua, Mexico, where Father had gone with his third wife, Martha Ann Thomas, in 1885 0n account of polygamy. Her first home here was a lumber room that had been built for a tithing office, and it was here that I, Minerva Elizabeth, was born 14 November 1888. Father served as bishop in Juarez for twelve years.”
