LIFE SKETCH DAVID WILLIAM CAMPBELL

In 1871, David William Campbell and his families were among those who went to rebuild Panguitch under the leadership of George W. Sevy. Panguitch had been abandoned three years earlier because of Indian troubles, but the town was found intact on their arrival with remnants of the former crops still in the fields. Their stay was brief here, and by 1875 they had relocated to Potato Valley (Escalante).

In 1879, a company of fifty families were called by President John Taylor to establish a mission on the San Juan. Their route took them through Panguitch where Bishop George W. Sevy joined them, and through Escalante where Bishop Schow and David William Campbell also joined the expedition. Bishop Schow had just returned from an exploring expedition of his own to the Colorado River, and served as their guide. Campbell's fourteen-year-old son, David Charley, went along, as well. The senior Campbell left both wives in Escalante as they were not willing to leave their new homes.

(No account beyond the account by Miranda Campbell Stringham, has been found naming the Campbells among the San Juan expedition. The Hole in the Rock company, as the expedition became known, did have assistance between Escalante and the Colorado, in their work at the 'Hole,' and some Escalante residents freighted supplies to the expedition throughout their six-month journey. Perhaps the Campbells participated in one of these forays.)

The Stringham account indicates that David William and Charley returned to Escalante when the San Juan company reached their destination, in agreement with other accounts telling of several who had not been 'called' leaving Bluff shortly after the groups arrival there.

David William separated from Elizabeth and took Kizzie to Oakley, Idaho. Then, alone he joined Charley and his young family at Ammon, near Idaho Falls, Idaho. He died at Ammon in 1904.
