SKETCH OF JOHN ALLAN'S LIFE
John Allan was born January 11, 1858 at South Cottonwood, Utah. He was the first son of John Allan and Janet McAuslan Allan.
In 1861 the family moved to a farm on the west bank of the Weber River near Coalville, on account of the Black Hawk War. In 1868 the family again moved to Coalville, and Peter then eight years of age, started to school. He was a very good student, especially good in numbers. Peter became acquainted with many of the leading authorities of the Church while they lived in Coalville because his father had one of the finest homes in town and the authorities usually stopped there when visiting in Coalville.
In 1872 the family moved again. This time to Richfield, Utah, a distance of over two hundred miles. They were members of the Richfield United Order, which was established in 1847.
In the summer of 1878 the Allan family were called to go to San Luis Valley, Colorado and assist in making a settlement there. John Allan married Jenny Hellstrom in November, and remained in Richfield another year until after their first son, Warren Eugene, was born. Before 1881 John had brought his young family to Durango, Colorado, and a daughter, Nellie, was born there 19 July 1881.
At some point, Jenny's mother, Anna Bridget (Brita) Olsson (Hellstrom) had joined John's household, perhaps to attend her daughter during Nellie's birth. In 1881 the Allan family all moved to Montezuma on the San Juan River, about sixteen miles above Bluff, Utah. John and his younger brother Peter, did not stay there very long, however, but went to Fruitland, New Mexico. In 1882, a daughter, Anna, was born at Montezuma. In 1883, son, John, was also born at Montezuma. When the San Juan River flooded the Allan ranch at Montezuma, Peter returned to help them and they all moved to Bluff in the year 1884. Daughter, Jennie, was born in New Mexico in 1885, but their last child, Robert, was born in Bluff in 1887. Jenny died at Mancos, Colorado, 7 October 1891.
John married a second wife, Ardell (Della) Holman Stevens, in Logan. To them were born two children, Walter in 1886 at Fruitland, New Mexico, and Chloe in 1889 at Bluff. Chloe's obituary (13 Aug 1931) indicates her childhood was spent in Fruitland, New Mexico and later moving to Cortez, Colorado. John appears next in 1920 on the U.S. Census at Blanding, listed as a farmer.
